Service Science: Perspectives from the Next Generation of Service Scholars

Theme of the Workshop
Service Science is an emerging academic discipline that is highly relevant to IS scholars. Information systems enable the creation of many services (e.g. cloud based storage), while simultaneously representing the context in which many services are co-created (e.g. IT consulting). However, despite substantial efforts within the field, researchers and practitioners still suffer from a lack of theory-based knowledge for engineering and managing services, and to leverage IS for service innovation. At the same time, service, a concept that can be considered the foundation of all economic exchange (e.g. Vargo and Lusch, 2004), now challenges previously established concepts in the IS discipline, such as the separation between corporate IS and consumer IS, or internal IS and external services. Service-focused research in IS needs to create and refine concepts, models, methods, and systems to reflect these developments. We call upon the next generation of service scholars that started their academic careers in the last 5 years to address the emerging challenges through fresh thinking.
Purpose of the Workshop
This workshop intends to offer a fresh perspective on the intersection of IS research and Service Science. We call for the next generation of service scholars, who have been influenced by the Service Science concepts that emerged in the mid-2000s. These young scholars who started their careers based on the hallmark observations of Service Science / Service Science Management and Engineering have the potential to transform the field at the beginning of this millennium. Scholars interested in questions that focus on innovative perspectives related to service that extend or even depart from conventional wisdom within IS research, are particularly encouraged to participate. Put differently, we are asking for scholars who are interested to shape the future of the field to join us in Istanbul. The workshop participants will develop their ideas in a short paper of not more than two pages (ECIS paper template) prior to the workshop. The workshop itself serves to present, discuss, and organize the ideas submitted. Based on the results, participants will form teams for developing joint research papers. The completed papers will be considered for a Special Issue in the INFORMS journal "Service Science".
Format of the Workshop
The workshop will be a one-day event, including three sessions. The first session will provide early career scholars working in the field of service science an opportunity to present and discuss individual ideas for the future development of Service Science. In the second session, participants will form teams to jointly develop research papers based on their ideas. The third session serves for discussing the ideas and to receive immediate peer-feedback. We expect that the author teams will finalize their papers after the workshop, and submit to a Special Issue in the INFORMS journal ‘Service Science’ that we are planning. The workshop will be concluded by the SIG Services assembly.

Justification of the Workshop and Sponsorship by AIS SIG Services
Service Science is a major research area within the IS discipline today, and the SIG Services was recognized by the AIS as an Outstanding SIG in 2015. This workshop will build on a series of successful meetings in the last few years and, for the first time, provide a forum specifically for early career scholars working in the field of Service Science to develop innovative ideas that can transform our understanding and design of IS and Service Systems. The workshop thereby complements the regular Service Science Track (“Service Innovation, Engineering, and Management”) that will again be hosted by the SIG Services at ECIS 2016. Both, the workshop and Service Science track represent major gatherings of the SIG Services in 2016.
No dedicated program committee is required. The workshop will be interactive, and build on individual position papers that need not be peer-reviewed.
Plan for Proceedings
The workshop will serve as a forum for building teams of authors that will co-create paper ideas from the perspective on the next generation of service scholars. As of October 9th 2015, we are in discussion with Prof. Paul Maglio, Editor-in-Chief of the INFORMS journal ‘Service Science’ about a Special Issue to be published based on an open call and papers to be developed at the workshop.
The primary target audience includes the current members of the AIS SIG Services, as well as other researchers interested in investigating and designing IT-based services. In particular, we call upon the next generation of service scholars that started their academic careers in the last 5 years to address the emerging challenges through fresh thinking.
Planned acceptance rate
Since short papers will be handed in and discussed at the workshop, no particular acceptance rate is set. However, the workshop chairs will perform an initial screening of the manuscripts.

Special equipment needed
No special equipment is required.
Prior experience of the proposers in workshops organization
The workshops organizers are experienced in hosting workshops in conjunction with conferences, since the SIG Services organizes an annual pre-ICIS workshop as well as many other service-related conference tracks and workshops world-wide. At ECIS 2015 in Muenster, the workshop chairs successfully organized a similar workshop for the SIG Services.
Prof. Dr. Daniel Beverungen
Daniel Beverungen is Full Professor at the University of Paderborn, Germany at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics. His main research interests comprise service science management and engineering, business process management, information modelling, and the design of information systems. His work has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals and was presented at major international conferences. In addition, he was involved in developing several industry standards. Currently, Daniel is a vice president for communications of the AIS Special Interest Group Services, and spokesman of the Focus Group on Business Process Management and Skill Management for Electric Mobility Services, supported by the German Federal Government.

Dr. Christoph F. Breidbach
Christoph F. Breidbach is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the University of Melbourne, Department for Computing and Information Systems. Prior to joining the University of Melbourne, Dr. Breidbach was a Postdoctoral Scientist at the University of California, Merced, and held visiting positions at the Indian School of Business and IBM’s Almaden Research Center. His research addresses the fundamental question of how ICTs transform service systems and has won multiple awards, including Best Paper of the Year by the INFORMS Service Science section. Dr. Breidbach’s publications appeared in the Journal of Service Research, Managing Service Quality, The Service Industries Journal, Service Science, Marketing Theory, and other outlets. He serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Service Research and the Journal of Service Theory and Practice, and holds leadership positions at ISSIP, the International Society of Service Innovation Professionals, as well as the AIS SIG Services.
